Fairy Folk.
A race of beings which predate Christianity and are depicted in folk law throughout the world. Fairy Folk have many sub species, but are, in turn, classed as fay, fey, fae, faerie; collectively, wee folk. The fey are not all good and light as commonly depicted in Disney movies. They are tricksters and mischievous. They like to remain neutral in the matters of mankind, though are fiercely protective over the world and have a growing dislike of mankind’s treatment of the earth.
Fairy folk are not immortal, but they age very very slowly. What would appear to be a Fairy of early teens will infact are 90 or so years old.
Their origins vary from country to country and very little is known about their full history. They are a hidden species, though once lived on earth alongside mankind, but would driven out as man kinds numbers increased. They live in the realm of fey known as Tír na nÓg, commonly known as “The otherworld”. This world is hard to find, though records state many accounts of mortal men and women being lured to it. Their accounts depict that time moves much slower in Tír na nÓg, and you could spend an hour there and find decades have passed in the mortal realm.
Species of Known fairy Folk:
Changelings
The offspring of fey folk that has been secretly left in the place of a human child. The apparent changeling could also be a stock, an enchanted piece of wood that would soon appear to grow sick and die.
A human child might be taken due to many factors: to act as a servant, the love of a human child, or malice.[1] Most often it was thought that faeries exchanged the children. Simple charms, such as an inverted coat, were thought to ward them off. The best way to get rid of a changeling is to make them laugh. The parents of a changeling child will have no choice but to take back their baby and leave the real baby behind.
Changelings would be identified by voracious appetite, malicious temper, difficulty in movement, and other unpleasant traits
Changelings usually can be identified by a greenish tint to their skin. Changelings also dislike shoes so they will probably be walking around with no shoes. They are very wise and will talk with highly intelligent words when they do speak. Their hair is also a way to identify one as the hair is usually very messy no matter how many times you brush, and it will grow very fast. It is said if you cut a changeling hair; it will grow back by the next morning. Their eyes also usually range from green to brown which is mostly earth colours and the same for their hair.
Some changelings might even forget they are not human and proceed to live a human life. Changelings which don`t forget however will later return to their fairy family and continue with their life leaving the human family confused, worried, and deeply sadden if they had not figured out of the switch. As for the human child that was taken will stay with the fairy family forever.
Pixies
Pixies, like nature itself, can be either very good...or very very bad. Pixies are said to disguise themselves as a bundle of rags to lure children into their play. The pixies of Dartmoor are fond of music and dancing. These Pixies are said to be helpful to normal humans, sometimes helping needy widows and others with housework.
Pixies can change shape, ranging from being small, tiny creatures to the size of a human. Their skin has a shine to it, almost like glitter and they are pale. They have large oval eyes, normally a deep blue or green. They have moth like wings and have the ability of flight. Their wings become small and transparent when they change into taller form.
Sprites
Small creatures, small beings no bigger than your thumb. They are what could be commonly called a fairy. A small winged creature, intelligent and generally kind. They are perfect miniature beautiful beings. They can, like pixies change shape to a more human height.
Water Sprites can breathe water as well as air and can be found in lakes, rivers and streams.
Fire sprites are hot headed like their physical being. They are surrounded by an orb of fire and like nothing more that dancing around fires. Often mistaken as a flame.
Air Sprites are crystalline blue in appearance and are often seen in the air, mistaken for light rays.
Earth Sprites are hidden, dark skinned and live in burrows and hills. They are the only sprite that does not have wings.
Nymphs
A nymph is any member of a large class of mythological entities that are more formally known as 'Gabi'. They were typically associated with a particular location or landform, in Gabi's case in the forests. They are known for their astounding beauty. However, no nymphs compare to their goddess Gabi. She is the almighty Queen of Nymphs. Nymphs live in mountains and groves, by springs and rivers, and in valleys and cool grottoes.
Usually female, they are dressed in white, decked with garlands of flowers, but they frequently had unnatural legs, like those of a goat, donkey or cow. They can move swiftly and invisibly, ride through the air and slip through small holes. Although not immortal, their lives exceeded men tenfold, and they retained their beauty until death.
They tend to frequent areas distant from man, but could be encountered by lone travellers outside the village, where their music might be heard, and the traveller could spy on their dancing or bathing in a stream or pool, either during the noon heat or in the middle of the night. They might appear in a whirlwind. Such encounters could be dangerous, bringing dumbness, besotted infatuation, madness or stroke to the unfortunate human.
There are many other species of fairy folk, goblins, trolls, brownies etc and details will be added on a later date.
