Jonas
Character Name:
Jonas
Species:
Human (Sumerian)/Demon (Fallen)
Age, Gender:
7000+, Male Human/Ageless Demon identifies as Male
Description:
Jonas is handsome, though stern, his long hair is so black, it gives of blue highlights, and his eyes smolder in a hue approaching that of chocolate. He has a swordsman’s build, according to his Demon, tall and lithe, though Jonas is solid and broad in the shoulders. Muscled like a slim hunting cat or a dancer, and moving with unconscious grace, Jonas gives off an air of contained energy, even in a still pose, that belies his usually calm demeanor.
He dresses simply, yet elegantly, in colors of black, silver and gold and he favors whatever fashion strikes his or Samyaza’s fancy.
Personality:
Jonas is, as one might expect of someone of his years, both patient and wise. He has seen it all, and while he looks forward to seeing more, very few things surprise him. He is a generally benevolent soul, and wants only the best for humanity, recalling well that he was human once. He formed the Council out of a desire to keep humanity safe and ignorant of the Supernatural World that exists twixt and tween their perception. He feigns neutrality, in order to be most favorably positioned between the polar forces in defense of humanity. Jonas is a fighter, in the truest sense, surrender does not come easily or at all.
Samyaza is an ancient force. He is not truly Evil, but he certainly is not good. He is a creature of Lusts, and finds himself in his current straits because he regularly surrenders to those Lusts and encourages Jonas to do the same. Jonas mollifies his hunger for human woman by seeking regular companionship, though thanks to having been burned by Lilith, Samyaza would prefer he do so by dishonest means. He is also a creature of vast and terrible knowledge, having shared much of this with Jonas over their very long association. If Samyaza were a Freudian concept, he would be the ID, though intellectually cunning and supernaturally empowered.
History:
We will not begin to attempt to summarize a life that spans more than seven thousand years, nor the life of a being that has existed since before Man took their first steps upon the earth. No, the effort would be futile, and there are none of us here eager to earn a Doctorate in Studied of Jonas. So, let us continue, and please do ignore the occasional interruption by a certain Fallen that cannot seem to keep his thoughts to himself.
You will pardon my vessel’s extreme arrogance in believing he could both silence me and refer to us in the third person.
Typically, Jonas does not appreciate being called anyone’s vessel, but we are getting ahead of ourselves. Let us begin at the very beginning, as that is where understanding can truly be found. As has been said elsewhere, Jonas is a man of extreme intelligence and ability, and what others might take to be eccentricity in his occasional arguments with himself, he would simply characterize as ‘complicated’.
Beginning at the beginning? How very zen, Master Yoda.
The time was ancient Sumer, roughly during the Ubaid period. It was a time that predated much of what we know about Angels and Demons, and even the before the legend of Gilgamesh. In this time, what we now call the Grigori, were more simply called the Watchers, and were often equated to the stars in the sky. It was believed that these stars came to Earth to teach law and justice to humankind. These beings loved humanity, but perhaps loved them too closely.
We loved them alright, as often as we could.
Because of what they represented to Men, they were often called upon when Sumerians worked magic, or wished to bless an undertaking. Each of these Watchers had their purview, there was a patron of writing, another of war, and still another of astronomy and astrology. Each one was known by several names, and it is due to these numerous names that Jonas became bonded to the oldest and strongest of the Grigori, called Samyaza.
That would be me. If there was one thing God got right, it was cursing Man to babble. If they still had a clear consistent language, I’d still be wasting away in my Prison.
Jonas was a young and accomplished magician. It was a time when cities were first beginning to rise, and the blessing of a sorcerer was not uncommon in a vast array of undertakings. He had grown as powerful as he was going to get without the outside aid of a greater being; he was gifted at binding the spirits of the air to his Will, and releasing them once their tasks were completed. He had learned to acquire the aid and blessing of the spirits without causing them harm, and through trade, they whispered their secrets to him. Jonas ambition was greater, however, and he was determined to make his mark in history and be hailed far and wide as the greatest magician of his time. Many others had summoned and bound Demons or even the Djinn to their service, but Jonas had yet to take that step. As ambitious as he was, despite the era he lived in, Jonas disliked slavery. He felt better service was received when it was freely given.
Sentimental twit, wasn’t he?
But soon enough, Jonas ambition began to outweigh his good sense. And so Jonas decided to summon and bind a servant of his own, telling himself that he would release him after he had learned and acquired enough power to do so.
There’s my boy!
Jonas chose to summon one of the lesser Watchers, one that was said to govern herbalism. He carefully chose the name, carefully created both the Circle of Binding and the Circle of Protection, and practiced the incantations for over a month, before he was confident of doing it properly. Jonas inscribed the marks, sealed them with his own blood, lit the proper candles, burned the proper components, and did everything correctly.
Fat lot of good that did, huh?
Everything was done properly, everything was completely perfectly, and everything should have worked perfectly – but for the name. Jonas had the wrong name for the Grigori, and instead of getting the one, he got another all together.
Surprise!
He received the Grigori Samyaza, who was far too powerful for the containment in place, though the Demon did not realize that at first. Jonas knew of this demon, and knew what his punishment must have been. When he had called Samyaza’s true name, he had freed the Fallen from where he was bound, deep in the valleys of the Earth, where he was meant to stay for seventy generations. Punished for his dalliance with Humanity, and the fomenting of rebellion against the Hosts of Heaven, and it was even said that the Grigori are tortured every moment they reside in their Prison. In short, Samyaza would have done anything to stay out of the place, and Jonas used this to his advantage.
Yes, you’re very smart. Don’t get snarky.
So, a Bargain was struck and it has been maintained for over Seven Thousand years. Samyaza resides within Jonas, sharing his power and his knowledge with the Warlock, while Jonas grants Samyaza his freedom and the joys of sensation through his body. It was an uneasy alliance at first, with both wary for trickery from the other, but over time trust and even respect developed, and now it is difficult for one to think of himself without the other.
And if I get full control and ‘beget’ a few Nephilim here and there, that’s just icing on the cake.
As a result of this Bond, Jonas has been walking the Earth for over Seven Millenia. He has gone by many names; he blessed the canals as Choga Mami, saw the rise of civilization in Europe, marveled at the Menhir of France, witenessed the first works of Naalebinding, and wandered the world as it changed. He was a scholar, a key mind in base-60 mathematics, saw men settle Greece moving out of Minoan Crete, witnessed works like the Beaker from Susa, aided the temple builders, and watched the first true cities rise in Sumer. He has seen the three kingdoms, he has worn Egyptian names and Roman names, and was a builder and destroyer in both. He gave rise to the legend of Solomon, and loved a woman called Sheba. He has watched history and made history, lived and loved and lost, but most of all, he has learned
Busy, weren’t we? Not ambitious my left eye. He’s worn more crowns than clothes, I’ll tell you that. Sheba was a hot little number, and there was nothing like commanding the many Jinn.
Most recently, in his wisdom, he formed the Council, a collection of powerful beings, in order to safeguard both humanity and the supernatural world by keeping one under control and the other ignorant if at all possible. He helped to form an uneasy alliance with the Vatican, and is currently on good working terms with The Fifth. He has not taken a firm stand in the polar battle that is surely to come, though he has no doubt that his steps is watched, and his allegiance could help tip the scales in favor of whomever he joined.
Samyaza’s history is wide and varied. It should be known that he harbors hard feelings towards Lilith, and human woman to some less extent. He was betrayed by Lilith, and as a result, she rose in God’s esteem, where he only fell. He has no enmity towards most Demons, and indeed many Angels, but he sneers at the blind servitude of the latter when he encounters it. He is not a God Fearing Fallen, and still loves Humanity enough to align his thoughts with Jonas and keep them protected.
That tease. She fell back to Earth, and lower still, but that's still too good for her.
Powers/Training/Experience/weaknesses
Jonas, the man, has lived 7000 and more years, and has derived from his time on Earth, countless skills, numerous languages, and an ability to adapt new skills fairly easily. For example, mathematics is amongst is earliest and most refined skills, and with so much being essentially mathematical, he has been able to derive other skills from just the one – music, various sciences, and several kinds of magic. This is just one primary example. Jonas was a Warlock at the time he summoned the Fallen that now inhabits his body, and in all his years, he has mastered his craft, and has accrued more esoterica and occult knowledge than nearly anyone else still living. Jonas, as a Conjurer, Abjurer, Summoner, Mage, Sorcerer, or Warlock, he has gone by all of the above, has mastered all the Spheres of Enchantment taught to him as a man and later by the Demon Within.
Jonas has Mastered the Nine Spheres, which appear in various forms throughout legend and history; Odin’s Runes, the Fae fondness for thrice and thrice again. Simplified, the Spheres are as followed; Correspondence, Entropy, Forces, Life, Matter, Mind, Prime, Spirit, and Time. Used singly, they are more than useful, used in conjunction with each other, Jonas has the means to bend, alter, or break the Laws of Physics and even the standards of Reality. Correspondence, for example, governs the secrets of spatial relationships, and such, Jonas has learned that all points are truly One Point, and thus he can teleport, see into distant spaces, have the semblance of flight, and co-locate nearly anywhere he wishes. Combined with another Sphere, Forces for example, he can end energy to a distant location, as lightning or fire. Combined with Life, he can heal at a distance, or change another’s form or combined with Entropy, an edifice can be corrupted to dust. Each of the Spheres can be used in concert to create nearly any number of effects, to one degree or another. The more ‘Reality Shattering’ the effect, the more difficult it is to engineer, the more complicated the ‘equation’, so to speak. However, Jonas is extremely gifted with ‘equations.’ Mundane witnesses, particular large amounts, make the axioms more difficult to alter, and thus, make the Spell more difficult to Cast, as an example. Magic in the old days, when magic was an expected part of life, was less subject to these kinds of obstacles. Jonas cannot be underestimated; however, as he has had thousands of years to figure out precisely how to baffle reality; rather than lightning, a bizarre short circuit fries a would-be attacker. Rather than disintegrating a structure, a building suffers a structural collapse. Rather than pulling the blood out of someone’s pores, they suffer a heart attack and drop dead. Subtlety is Jonas, and while he is capable of Gandalfian vulgar displays, he prefers not to risk the fragile psyche of the Mundanes or the fragile world itself.
As if this Mastery of the Powers were not enough, Jonas is the vessel of an ageless Being, an ancient force, one of the earliest Fallen; in short, a Demon. One of the Being’s names is Samyaza, and he was once one of the Watchers, one of the Grigori sent to Earth to watch over Humanity. He was First among them, and once an Angel of the Supreme Judgment Council of the Heavenly Court, until he encouraged and led the defection of all the Grigori to live amongst Men, taking Mates and begetting the Nephilim. As such, he has a host of powers that he can and will give Jonas access to, however, because Samyaza does not have dominant control of Jonas, quite the opposite, and these powers are filtered through Jonas’ very powerful sense of identity. As such, they are somewhat diminished in strength. However, Jonas is capable of fully accessing these powers at Will, but risks losing control of his body to Samyaza; unless a bargain is struck. Jonas, in deep need, has done these rarely throughout his seven millennia of life, and on those days – Samyaza roamed the world freely, in the full bloom of his power.
Physical Ability; Samyaza’s presence lends Jonas a certain amount of increased speed, strength, and agility. He is not the physical match of a true Angel or Demon, not without surrendering control to Samyaza.
Shape Change; Samyaza can alter Jonas’ form to a limited extent. It is extremely useful for disguise, and he can allow Jonas to appear as any kind of human or humanoid, but Jonas cannot become a Lion, for example, without surrendering control to the Demon.
Flight, Teleportation; Yes, but the point is moot. Jonas can do both at will, on his own.
Telepathy, Mind Control, Astral Projection; Yes, again, Jonas is more likely to exercise his magic, but Samyaza’s gifts are a strong advantage when extreme duress prevents proper focus for spellwork. Possession, directly, is not a possibility, as part of their earliest Bargain, Samyaza cannot leave Jonas body without being consigned to his former Prison once again.
Immortality; Samyaza cannot be slain by mortal means, and he has used this gift to not only extend Jonas’ life, coupled with Jonas’ sorcery, neither can be killed by any standard mortal means. This does not mean he cannot be hurt, only that it is difficult, all things considered.
Family/Ties:
Long Dead; Other Angels and Demons may recall Samyaza fondly or poorly. Anyone in the Magical Community might well know Jonas by either his current name or his many other names.

Jonas entered the Club after passing the door test. He answered the question thrice, and then informed the doorman that his rudeness was becoming dangerous, at which point he was allowed entrance. He could have bullied his way into the place at any time, in truth, he could have dispensed with the doorman altogether, but he was already going to be noticed, why raise red flags right away.
You just like to spoil my fun. What was he going to do? Glare at us to death.
The Warlock sighed, and shook his head, whispering to Samyaza. “There’s no sense in being rude when we do not have to be. I am not here to deliver a message of any kind, I am simply curious about who may or may not frequent the place.” His eyes scanned the room as he approached the bar, his chocolate gaze turning molten as they lit upon several curvaceous forms. He sighed, Samyaza’s lusts were all too often his own.
Jonas! Are we wenching this evening?
“No one calls women wenches any more, Sam.” Jonas smiled and ordered a drink at the bar; a vodka martini, hold the olive. “I’m fairly certain they don’t appreciate it.”
Your point?
Jonas turned away from the room as his drink arrived, and left a generous tip for the man that mixed it. It was good. He smiled slightly, and glanced left and right along the bar.
Jonas? Do you recall the Cult of Dagon?
He sipped his drink to disguise the fact that he was talking to himself. He could do so silently, but he felt like if his lips were moving, it was a conversation with an external party, rather than an internal one. “Of course I do. Fools all. I believe we broke the last Circle back in ’44. Why do you ask?”
Well, you remember the fellow that hid a fish eye behind an eye patch.
“Of course, oh, Lord and Lady, don’t tell me he’s –“
Here, and giving you the hairy eyeball, or is that the fishy eyeball…
Sometimes, just sometimes, he wondered what life would have been like if he’d summoned the right Demon.
Too bad we’ll never know, eh Chief? Don’t look now, but I think he brought Deep Ones…
